Knots are a commonly used term in regards to massage therapy to describe a really tense point or part of a muscle that can often be palpated (felt). Knots are simply overactive muscle fibres. The nerve response within the muscle, whether from repetition, posture or injury, causes the muscle to sustain tension.

The word knot is a simple way to describe a tense point.

Massage therapy can help decrease the tension in the affected muscle and surrounding muscles, increase pain free range of motion, increase circulation, and decrease swelling (if present).
